Tales of Blazer (or... Stalking the Baby Cottontail)
Blazer has become a regular visitor to my little Within The Fence world. He is still tinier than belief -- I saw an ant run over his paw once, and the ant was BIGGER THAN HIS PAW (although to be fair, it was a REALLY REALLY BIG ANT!!).

I believe he is living next door (not the yard where he was born, but on the other side of my house.  He was Within The Fence one morning, just munching away (he is ALWAYS eating - gotta keep up with that growing body).  Then he ambled around my front yard for a bit, sampling the yummies.  Then he hiphiphipped (not quite hopping) across the road.  I live in a private community. The roads are only 10mph and very lightly traveled.  In the center of the road in front of my house, there is a birch tree.  Right in the middle of the road. Literally. The road parts around it. Around the birch tree is a planter-type thingie filled with lillies.  Currently, they are about two feet tall.  Blazer disappered into them.  Every so often, a lily would twitch, but I wasn't sure if that was him or a chipmunk.  Just when I had decided that he had gone out the other side (the lilies are so tall, I never would have seen him), he popped out again and hiphiphipped back to my yard and up my driveway.

Compelled with curiousity, I hurried through my house and peeked out my side door.  There he went past my porch (hiphiphip) and stopped at the lawn to munch some more.  I tiptoed out onto the porch, and he rolled a tiny ear at me and went about six yards further to the end of the house.  Since he wasn't in any panic, I tiptoed to the edge of the lawn.  He rolled his ear at me again and went about another six yards away to the edge of my shed. Each time we did this, he'd stop and immediately ate what ever was in front of him.  I followed until I was at the end of my house, peeking around the corner.

Six foot tall woman dressed entirely in black, stalking a tiny baby bunny.

The neighbors already think I'm bonkers anyway.

He went out to the edge of my yard which borders a large field.  I went to the shed.  By this time, he was in weeds, and all I could see was the tip of his head and his ears.

Occassionally a tall dandelion flower would suddenly wave around wildly, fall over, then bounce and flail as it was slurped into a tiny bunny mouth like spaghetti.

A car door slammed, and he bounded to the corner of my neighbors' fence.  I paralleled him.  By this time, he was a little annoyed with me.  He wiggled through the fence (he can fit THROUGH the chain link spaces).  I followed at a distance.  And he went under their woodshed.

I sat on the grass and waited to see if he'd come out again.

He did.  On the other side of the shed.  And there he sat, all proud of himself for outwitting the stalker.  He gave himself a complete bath, including pulling down his ears and nibbling them clean (which I hadn't yet seen a wild rabbit do, so I was able to add THAT to the list, whee!!).

And finally I stood up, and his I'm SO Proud Of Myself demeaner absolutely fell away.  And he thumped his tiny back foot at me.

He has definately inherited his momma's rabbitude!

Turns out those neighbors have grown a garden JUST for the rabbits. (giggle)

Last night, Blazer visited, and a few minutes after he arrived, a teenager bunny came.  I've seen him a couple of times, but never for very long.  Blazer was very submissive, which seemed to puzzle the teenager, but after a while, they were both contentedly eating nearby.  Afterwards, there was some chasing and jumping.

And suddenly, Blazer bounced into a small patch of tall grass, and scared out about four or five young sparrows!  The only creatures smaller than him!  He was so proud and bouncy!  He knew they were there.  He's pretty wary of anything much bigger than that (and will punch out at chipmunks and avoid them if he can - he is bigger than chipmunks, but not very bigger, and doesn't seem to think he's bigger at all).

A few minutes later, a car going by spooked Blazer away, but the teenager stuck around... and then the baby sparrows mounted an air-bourne counter attack and dive-bombed him!  He flounced away, but was back about five minutes later, hoovering up birdseed just underneath my window with his velvety tiny nose.

And of course... PICTURES

Politely eating together. Blazer is on the left.

Becoming more relaxed with each other. Again, Blazer on the left.

We have TWO bunlets!

As I came home from laundry this evening I found Nobbles in front of my building.

I'm thinking of changing his name to Nibbles because of this hilarious habit he has - He will be nibblenibblenibbling on grass and discover that there is an especially tasty bit a little further out. STREEEETCH neck out to get it and hey there's ANOTHER tastybit out there....So it looks like he's being pulled along by his mouth and the rest of him is just being dragged behind. It can take 3-4 hips before the rest of him catches up

Then as I sat and watched, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, and there was ANOTHER even smaller baby bunlet coming out of the bushes on the other side of the walk. Didn't see him/her do much except sit in the grass being round.

Eventually the mosquitoes drove me to move and they both fled.
